Research Experiences for High School Students
Research Experiences for High School Students provides academically-talented students in grades 10-12 the chance to participate in real-world scientific discovery and find out what it takes to be a professional scientist. Students are immersed in cutting-edge research, investigating original questions to which the answer is not yet known. They work for six months with Arizona State University scientists, engaging in inquiry activities that are integral to their mentors’ research projects and undertaking their own related research. They also enter the Central Arizona Science and Engineering Fair, where past participants have garnered top honors. Juniors and seniors who complete the program successfully receive a small scholarship for educational expenses at the college of their choice.

Students participate first-hand in the process of scientific inquiry and discovery, learning to:
  • Observe
  • Make predictions
  • Formulate hypotheses
  • Collect accurate data
  • Analyze data
  • Reflect on their findings
  • Generate new questions
  • Present what they've learned to others
They also:
  • Learn to use sophisticated scientific equipment
  • Discover the characteristics and preparation needed to become a scientist
  • Observe the work of professional scientists
  • Benefit from an experience normally only available in graduate school
Most exciting of all, students participate in making new scientific discoveries!

“The experience I gained . . . is invaluable. I was able to participate in a study that could one day better the health problems of mankind.”

"I learned more from being in this program, and had more fun, than I ever did at high school. This program helped prepare me for life in the real world."

“For the first time I was able to satisfy my curiosity, seek answers, and learn about science beyond the traditional classroom setting. This program was as rich and exciting as it was challenging.”

“My mentors were absolutely remarkable people, they were kind and were eager to teach us what we didn’t know. I was particularly impressed with their strong commitment to guide us through a journey of scientific discovery without taking over the project and doing it themselves.”

“This is the best program for working with a mentor and learning about research. I can’t stress enough how vital and instrumental this will be to my success in college and the rest of my life.”

"There is no doubt that SCENE was a life changing experience for me that propelled me into the scientific world."

"This program is nothing less than a transforming process that is happening at a critical time in our young lives."
